The sequel to the New Zealand horror comedy will start filming next year.

Horror movies and metal music - a combination as timeless and perfect as fall and pumpkins, mac and cheese, or mint and choc chip (haters be damned!) When 2015’s love-letter to metal mania Deathgasm was received positively by audiences after its SXSW premiere, audiences were clamoring for a sequel that continued the story of lovable rocker Brodie. For a while, it looked like said sequel was doomed – until now!

Variety have revealed that Deathgasm 2 is in fact going ahead, with writer and director Jason Lei Howden returning, and filming due to begin in New Zealand next year. Milo Cawthorne, James Blake and Kimberley Crossman, the stars of the first Deathgasm, are in talks to return to their roles.

Deathgasm followed two high-school metal-heads, Brodie (Cawthorne) and Zakk (Blake), desperate to escape their mundane lives by rocking out in their band Deathgasm and meddling in dark magic. While doing so, the pair unwittingly summon an evil entity called The Blind One, and chaos ensues.

According to Variety, Deathgasm’s sequel (produced by Raven Banner Entertainment) will follow Brodie as he once again “…turns to black magic to raise his former bandmates from the dead so he can win battle of the bands as well as the heart of his ex-girlfriend Medina.”

But that’s not all – in addition to this long-awaited sequel, Howden is also co-writing a four-issue Deathgasm comic book series for Opus Comics that will explore what happens between the first film and the sequel.

Andrew T. Hunt, managing partner at Raven Banner commented that “This comic book will not only keep the fans engaged, but will be a perfect bridge between the original film and ‘Deathgasm 2’ which we’re excited to go to camera with in 2023.”

When talking with Variety, director Howden had this to say about the upcoming sequel:

"I'm thrilled to be working with Raven Banner and Opus Comics to expand the Deathgasm universe and bring the evil-crushing power of metal to new and existing audiences […] Like we saw with Eddie Munson in Stranger Things, not all heroes wear capes. Some wear Anthrax tees and denim vests."

As Howden mentions, the viral popularity of heavy metal hunk Eddie Munson from Stranger Things 4 has people itching for another horns-throwing hero – and Deathgasm 2 will surely fill that void.
