Interstellar (Nolan, 2014)

1
With his Batman trilogy now complete, Christopher Nolan has found his next project.

According to multiple sources, Nolan has set his sights on a sci-fi project titled Interstellar, which he is in talks to direct and produce. The project involves time travel and alternate dimensions in a story that sees a group of explorers travel through a wormhole. The script is based on scientific theories developed by a Kip Thorne, a theoretical physicist, a gravitational physicist and astrophysicist at Caltech.

Sources say that dealmaking has been underway for months and is described as very complex

Interstellar is set up at Paramount but would be made by both Paramount and Warner Bros., where Nolan and his Syncopy banner are based and for which he has made the three Batman movies as well as Insomnia and Inception. (The Prestige was made for Disney.)

The script for Interstellar was written by Jonathan Nolan, Chris' brother, who worked on The Dark Knight Rises and The Dark Knight, as well as Prestige. Jonathan Nolan (known as Jonah) also has a "story by" credit for Memento, Chris Nolan’s breakout movie.

Steven Spielberg was previously attached to direct Interstellar and produce with Lynda Obst. It is unclear if Spielberg will remain involved, especially considering the director's planned next movie, Robopocalypse, was delayed indefinitely on Wednesday.

Regardless of how a deal shakes out, Interstellar has all the elements that seem to attract Nolan. Apart from his brother’s involvement, there is the complex and multi-layered nature of the story.

Nolan is repped by WME and Bloom Hergott.

Spielberg originally attached, so you know Jonah's screenplay and idea probably wasn't a trifle.

Erm... I like Nolan just fine but that looked awfully ponderous and self-serious. Even by his standards. I'll wait for the reviews to come in before deciding whether it's worth a trip to the theater.
This is a snakeskin jacket. And for me it's a symbol of my individuality and my belief in personal freedom.

yes nolan, and i have to admit matthew mcconaughey has converted me. yes i loved dazed & confused but he quickly became a parody of himself. lately though, it's been really good, solid performances. recently saw dallas buyer's club and killer joe, great stuff from him.

Have you watched True Detective? That show won him the Oscar.

took the fam to see this yesterday in IMAX before it gets bumped. it was fantastic in every way. really. the acting, the cast, the story, the effects, score, everything. but it seemed like there was a lot missing. i realize he had a LOT of ground to cover in a relatively short amount of time, but this seemed like a 2,000-page novel condensed into movie form. yes, it was almost 3h but i did not notice. i hope he does a "director's cut" with another 2h of material inserted for that matter. i was left with a lot of questions that i bet could be answered by some of this "missing" material (do NOT read unless you've seen the film):
1) he stumbles upon NASA one evening and is launching the next day? seems ridiculous and hard to believe. i guess we were supposed to assume a time lapse? but the way murph got out of the truck it very much seemed like the same day he left.
2) when NASA gets excited at his mention of gravity, michael caine said that they first noticed/experienced the gravitational anomalies 48 years ago or something. we see later that matthew m was the cause of his particular anomalies and that "we" built the mechanism to be able to affect earth with it. so... what caused the previous 48 years of anomalies?
3) when he awakens, he's on a populated space station in saturn's orbit. i guess we're to assume that's due to the presence of the wormhole? but then we seen brand, alone, on "her" world, so it doesn't seem like we're using the wormhole?
4) the space station holds a finite amount of people - matthew m can see the curvature from his hospital window, must be pretty small. how did they decide who got to live there?
5) murph shows up after 2 years in hibernation, implying she came from earth. if there are that many people on the space station and they seem to be prepping spacecraft to do "something", that implies earth was already doomed. but she was still there?
6) he didn't even ask about his son?
stuff like that. but like i said, i'd see it again in a heartbeat. not exactly breaking new ground from a plot perspective, but very happy to see some serious sci-fi films being made these last few years.
