light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation, a concept that produced a visible beam of light 50 years ago. as a gift, this jackass has decided to tell us why lightsabers could never exist:

as a palette cleanser, i give you this, so you can pretend you have a light saber and can incinerate your enemies willy-nilly:

There's a really good exhibit at the Smithsonian right now on the history of the laser. They have a web based version as well.
Wicked lasers has good products but they're a bit over priced. But at least with them the power listed is visible and not almost all IR like on the cheaper Chinese ones.

I managed to pick up an awesome mil-surpluss green laser with a beam that is clearly visible in daylight (it is utterly immense in darkness) for only £40. The enclosure isn't too big either and it's built to last. Best gadget-buy I've made in a long time.

Naw, that worked better in the old tube laser days. Now that everything has gone solid state it just doesn't have the same impact. Come see my big, long powerful tube worked much better than come see my short, stubby diodes. Chicks just don't seem to be impressed by that.
