wow did we really never talk about this film? weird. watched it again a couple weeks ago, this time the non-director's cut. i missed the additional scenes, but enjoyed it even more this time. this is a great film. i think the director's cut is the way, though.

that's ridiculous. while i don't love it as much as the vvitch, i do love it. it's funny, both recent horror movies that i like the most are about dealing with grief - this and hereditary. and both involve arcane beliefs and practices.
absolutely incredible work here. and i do mean work - so, so much research went into this video, including reaching out to (and talking to) people both in and involved in the film to confirm some details, etc. some wild things here that i for sure never would have caught. as with his previous Ari Aster film analysis, there are a couple things that feel like a reach, but i certainly can't argue with the work (and therefore receipts). as this is SEVEN GODDAMN HOURS LONG, it took me a few days to watch this piece-meal, but that certainly didn't diminish the impact. the real lesson here is - yes, this guy had to do a ton of work to put this video together, but Ari Aster had to do way more research work to make this film - and every little detail of it - the way it is. really incredible. Ari may be an insane person. and i love him for it, and am here for it. if you're at all into the deep work of film analysis/meaning, i highly suggest watching this guy's videos. he's apparently working on The VVitch next. cannot wait.
also, for the record, i love the film. not as much as Hereditary, but i do love it, and with this many-many-many-layered information, i'll probably appreciate it even more next time.
