Candy - true crime drama on hulu. only hit my radar as i know joe bob wrote a book about this particular crime (and was a story producer on this series). great cast (and great small role for timberlake), and one of the most insane stories i've ever heard. i went in cold, not really knowing anything about this event, and holy shit. i can't believe how this turned out. did NOT expect what happened in this case. not going to spoil it here for you, but holy shit. we were talking about what happened for a good 90 minutes post-credits on the final episode, doing all kinds of research online, etc. it just seems completely unreal. i'm blown away by how this turned out. to the point where i'm looking for a way to read the transcripts from the trial because i'm in total disbelief. also, turns out there's yet another ltd series coming on this subject later this year on HBO, starring elizabeth olsen. weird that after 40 years, we get two in one year. there was apparently a made for TV miniseries in the early 90's, but they changed the names. seriously, if you don't know the story, do not look it up first. just watch. fucking crazy.

holy shit what happened to michael ironside? jesus.
We're all getting old.
Yeah, sure, and i thought he looked that way in Turbo Kid, but damn he looks like five of that guy now. That can’t be healthy for an older man.

Pistol - hulu ltd series based on steve jones' autobiographical book. good cast, and even though a lot of events are simplified and/or out of order, it's great info for someone that doesn't know anything about the sex pistols. it's incredible that a few dudes went from stealing gear that they had no idea how to play to the biggest band in the world to implosion in 2.5 years. watch it and spit at your TV.

My wife and I saw Everything Everywhere All At Once the other night. My parents are in town and babysat, and it was difficult to explain the movie to them the next day. It's pretty wild, but there's an emotional core to the movie that keeps it grounded during all the multiverse jumping around. I recommend it.

Shining Girls - AppleTV series based on a book from 2013 i think. i haven't read it. it is not at all what you think it's going to be based on the trailer, if you watch it. it's some kind of high-concept, low-key sci-fi/time travel show disguised as a newspaper reporter chasing a serial killer crime drama. it's very well done show, very interesting, except for the fact that there are never any answers to anything, and in the last couple episodes, it breaks all its own rules. still, pretty damn good and entertaining. unreliable narrator. could easily be called "Continuity Error: The Series" as that's what it feels like until you figure out what's happening. seems like elizabeth moss only ever does "woman in trouble/woman being tortured" roles. not sure what's up with that. so she hits a lot of familiar notes (for her) in this portrayal. doesn't help that janine from handmaid's tale shows up in the back half as well.

Barry - season 3 finally arrived, and just ended last night. another great season. seems like, with that ending, the show may be over. haven't heard if it got renewed, but if not, would be a natural if unsatisfying ending. still, great season full of laughs and action. hader rules.

holy shit i had forgotten how S5 ended. it's been so long. i am super-hyped for S6 now! have to wait another six weeks. fuck!
season 6 was another fucking amazing season. goddamn i am going to miss this show. so fantastic. i'm really unclear what the movie would cover at this point. feels like most of the threads were tied up in this season. but i'm game to find out! if you didn't watch this show, remedy that immediately.

No Time To Die - finally watched this, as it finally hit free streaming. unbelievable how long it took. anyway, i know it took a lot of flack, and while some is certainly deserved, it was far from as awful as i was led to believe it would be. it was... fine? not great, but not awful. first movie to absolutely kill james bond. seems no possible explanation of the ending where he lives. he killed himself because he couldn't be with his girl/daughter. very un-bond-like, but shrug. then, post credits, we get the sentence on screen "James Bond will return". really? how the actual fuck is that possible? back to the film, there were a couple action set pieces that were phenomenal, just felt like there were pretty few of them for a 3h bond film. that being said, it didn't feel like it was 3h, so i guess it wasn't exactly "slow", just not very "bond-y". again, shrug. it was fine.

We Own This City - i expected this to be a massively biased sermon on what happened, but it is surprisingly based on actual facts. don't get me wrong, there is a clear agenda and bias here, and lots & lots of dialog, but it does manage to convey the insane facts of what happened in Baltimore. hilariously, at almost the exact midpoint of the series, seemingly everyone decides to start doing a philly accent. it's pretty amusing. i wouldn't call it "recommended", but if you have lived under a rock and don't know what happened in one of the most corrupt police organizations in history, you can learn some history here, as long as you can discount the social sermons. and, again - a masterclass in philly accents in the back half here.

Molly's Game - stayed away from this for so long because of the dumb title. once i heard someone talking about it, it sounded interesting so i checked it out. it's a crazy story that translates to the screen very well. well acted, well cast, well done. i'd recommend a watch.

The Thing - yes, one of my favorite films of all time returned to the silver screen for its 40th anniversary. this is one i had never had the opportunity to see on the big screen so i jumped at the chance. unfortunately, it was projected in shit quality with cropped aspect ratio, which was infuriating. but it was still enjoyable to watch in that format. lots of little visual and audio details that just don't pop out at home. while fuck Fathom Events for treating it like shit, i'm happy i got to see it. one thing that still bothers me about this film though - helicopters, even the Bell 206 Jetranger, are capable of hovering. it's kind of their thing. so it makes no sense why the norweigian pilot didn't just pace the dog so they could shoot it. why fly past it, make a big circle back around, then try again, over and over? kind of - no, really - dumb. other than that, i have very few nits to pick with this film. it's nigh-perfect.

I actually like Casino a little better than Goodfellas, though maybe it's because I saw it first. Job Bob and Don Rickles, what's not to love? Also Lorraine Bracco annoys the hell out of me. Every performace she seems like she's half asleep.

S1 was fucking fantastic. watched the first two episodes of S2 and was quite let down. it was nowhere near the pace of the first season. took a break for a week before coming back to it. either i needed that perspective shift, or it got way better very quickly, or both, but loving S2 so far. i'm only one episode behind now, so i've seen the first six. some great scenes here for sure. and gretchen from You're The Worst is in this season as kind of the big baddie (i guess?) highly recommended if you haven't gotten in on this show yet.

s3 is coming. can't be soon enough. i need more of this.
S3 of The Boys was full-on fucking great. I enjoyed it way more than s2 I think. That finale sets up what should be a totally bonkers s4, which I’m guessing would be the last? Who knows. As long as the creative team stays together, they have my endorsement to film as many as they want. Gory, hilarious, disturbing, loving - hits all the notes pretty damn perfectly. If you have somehow not been watching, correct that ASAP.

Clockwork Orange County - documentary about the legendary OC punk venue called “The Cuckoo’s Nest”. It mostly uses footage from a different documentary intercut with poorly-filmed and recorded interviews from people who were there - members of bands, the club owner, etc. crucially, none of the police or government officials who were involved in the efforts that led to it closing. Huge miss, as maybe the truth could have finally gotten some press. Regardless, a short, interesting doc about the origins of the LA punk scene for people who didn’t really know much about it.

The Sadness - If you’re anything like me, you’ve been seeing a lot of hype for this film around. Word of mouth has been 100% positive in my circle. So I finally checked it out, and it lives up to all the hype. Fucking great movie. It’s not a “zombie movie”, so if that’s why you’ve avoided it, don’t. It’s essentially like “what if the ‘hell’ of Event Horizon were the entire film”? Balls-out excellent gore scenes, full-speed depravity, bleak as fuck ending typical of far-east films, creepy as fuck characters - this film has it all. Wish Joe Bob would show films like this instead of, say, Def By Temptation. This film deserves all the love it’s getting, and more.
