TC wrote:Your Honor - Bryan Cranston's new SHO show. started watching it, 2.5 episodes in and it's good. he plays a huge piece of shit that has a very good reason for being a piece of shit (where have i seen that before?). his son is a giant fucking dummy, playing the wildcard. i can't believe they haven't had certain conversations, or at least we weren't privy to them if they happened. some next-level assumptions required of the audience so far. but like i said, it's good and enjoyable. great to see the guy who played arnold rothstein on boardwalk empire in another fantastic role. odd to see him cursing so freely, since arnold almost never did, but he is so goddamn menacing every time he's on camera. can't see this situation resolving well for anyone involved.

got caught up on this. holy shit is it crazy. i don't mean "unpredictable" really, as you could see this was going to not go well, but it's like cranston's character was handed a shovel and told to see how deeply he could dig himself a hole. and Michael Stuhlbarg's character (rothstein on boardwalk empire) is fantastic. he's such an underrated, menacing actor. or at least, he plays menacing very well. hope to continue to see him more. not sure how many more episodes there are this season but i'm positive this is all going to blow up in cranston's face.

The Little Things - on paper, this should be fantastic - denzel washington, rami malek, jared leto, among many other fine actors - but in reality it's just a police procedural that goes nowhere, and one you've seen plenty. a well-acted meh.

The Head - this danish show has real deep 'The Thing' vibes. it takes place at an antarctic research station. they even watch 'The Thing' in the first episode. and someone isn't what they say they are. but there's not a lot of gore or practical effects, or horror for that matter. in fact, some people get shot with very little blood, even. it's maddening at times (like, how the fuck is it taking 48h for him to get the entire fucking story?!?!?), and asks a lot of the viewer to believe at times (it didn't occur to anyone shooting it that you should be able to see everyone's breath, pretty much at all times outside?), but it was enjoyable and i hope they do more than the six episodes we got (although, it's pretty self-contained, don't know how you'd continue the story. would have to be a prequel of polaris 5 maybe?). good sort of "what happened here" mystery. sort of 'the thing' mixed with an hercule poirot story. definitely more mystery than horror. it's only six hours, you should check it out if you have hbo.

The Dead Don't Die - Easily my least favorite Jarmusch so far. It's not even close to his better films. What was the point of this? It's not really a satire, it's not really a horror film, it's not really a comedy, it's not really anything other than lots of great actors phoning it in. I mean, Tilda Swinton is always the best in anything she's in and that's true for The Dead Don't Die too. But the movie itself was so completely... pointless?

Psycho Goreman - Yeah, you need to see this. It's the sick brainchild of Steve Kostanski, of The Void fame. Although this is much more like his previous stuff aka wonderfully cheesy practical effects, an absolute bonkers plot and some very good gore. Also, it's HILARIOUS.

EDIT: While checking out Kostanskis IMDB page, I saw that he did the special makeup effects on a few episodes of the new Day of The Dead tv-series on SyFy. There's a Day of the Dead tv-series on SyFy??

Ah, it’s still buy or rent, not streaming. Not spending money at the moment, in the middle of moving.

Allen vs. Farrow - holy fuck. the trailer was all, "no matter what you think you know, it's just the tip of the iceberg" or whatever. they weren't kidding. jesus. allen is such a giant piece of shit. also, i have tried to like some of his films, just can't. he's fucking annoying at best. anyway, watch this show. it's only 4h of your life.

Hmm. I would say the doc did make a strong case in support of Dylan's allegations AND YET it would have been both a better piece of journalism/art AND ultimately probably a better piece of advocacy if they had given more space to opposing arguments. Why were only Mia's white children interviewed on camera - and Moses Farrow's allegations of abuse and racial discrimination so readily dismissed/ignored? Three of Mia's adopted Asian children have died and Moses says these are deaths due to suicide and drug abuse - was this not considered relevant? Also, one look at the guy suggests that Ronan is Sinatra's kid, and this goes to the question of honesty in the relationship between Farrow and Allen, yet again the filmmakers chose to avoid the subject. Sure, one might argue none of these things are strictly relevant to the events of that disputed day, but then neither is Allen's relationship to Soon-yi (an adult), whose story they very questionably chose to tell without her consent, nor the half-baked criticism of Allen's movies (apparently his goal is to "gaslight" audiences into accepting May-September relationships - give me a fucking break!). Ultimately, the job of a filmmaker is not to make a case but to get to the truth, however awkward, uncomfortable or contradictory, and these two didn't do a thorough enough job IMHO.

sure. but the fact that so many of his films apparently include adult men having relationships with very young girls is pretty... coincidental. and i didn't know that about the deaths. i think anyone that has that many adopted kids should be looked at regardless. it's kind of ridiculous. all the allegations yet they keep giving her children? weird for sure.

Q: Into The Storm - this is a wild six-part doc. i really hadn't been paying attention but the deep-seated forum drama around 4chan and 8chan absolutely play a role in it. it's really wild. made me like ron watkins quite a bit. his dad is a character for sure. just, as weird as the whole thing is, it's way more weird than you think. entertaining watch for sure.

The Last Blockbuster - a quite enjoyable nostalgia trip. I spent countless hours in video stores, favoring the two local mom & pop stores and trying to avoid blockbuster like the plague whenever possible. My two local stores always had things that weren’t hollywood hits, always tried to stock obscure horror titles, so i loved them. But did eventually have no choice but to use blockbuster until netflix was invented to mail me DVDs. Had no idea blockbuster still existed with that same model, at the time. Crazy. Guess i completely blocked them out, being pissed they drove my local stores out of business. This doc explains why and how that happened. And makes me glad Sandy (manager of the last Blockbuster) is still holding that flag. I agree with basement nerd guy, it’s just not an experience you can replicate. There should be more.

Them - at first, it seems like yet more white guilt porn. but - and i'm only 2 episodes in - it takes some crazy twists. becoming very menacing. curious to see where this goes.

I watched this one. It did bring back some fun memories. My dad and I used to go to Blockbuster on Friday or Saturday nights and pick out some crappy B movies to watch. Sometimes there were some good films thrown in too.
Some years later a mom and pop video store opened up literally across the street from my place and I would go there all the time to rent stuff. Also slept with the girl that worked there a few times, but that did not get me free rentals sadly. I can't help but wonder if that was a commentary on my performance.
Years later Blockbuster opened up Blockbuster Music right next to the main video store, which also sold laserdiscs. They were over priced, but when the place closed and went out of business, they had laserdiscs on sale for pennies on the dollar. I really cleaned up at the time.
I do have to wonder how long the last Blockbuster can survive. At a certain point few people will even have hardware to play back shiny discs.
Just cut them up like regular chickens

No doubt. I'm trying to track down a decent VHS player to transfer some stuff and it's crazy expensive. Same with a tape deck.

Them - got even more nuts in the final two episodes. did circle back to white guilt porn a bit but the creepy/supernatural elements were all great. at the end, it's a story about how a family processes grief. i don't know what it is with shows/movies about that but they work very well for me. like Legion, there's another great example. anyway, i recommend watching it. i also recommend not watching the behind the scenes interviews. the creepy character is "tap dance man", and is played by jean-paul from seinfeld. it's crazy.

Mare Of Easttown - kate winslet plays a small-town pennsylvania detective investigating murder of a teen mother. watched the first two episodes so far, liking it. i like kate, and man does she nail the idiosyncrasies of the philly accent. i mean nails. it's pretty impressive. based on e2 ending, this is going to get very ugly in a good way. will keep you posted.
