Gotta love it when a studio owns a property and decides to make sequels, wishes of the original creator be damned. I think the telling line in the story was: Crowe quipped to ScreenDaily: "Donnie's not in [the new film] but there are meteorites and rabbits." Translation: "We think people liked the original film just because it was weird, so we're going to throw some of the same weird elements into the sequel and people will surely love it." How can you even call the film Donnie Darko 2 if he's not even in it? Shouldn't it be called Samantha Darko? Bah, studio heads. I predict this will go straight to dvd, and will be universally ignored. That's usually how these things pan out (Butterfly Effect 2, Starship Troopers 2).

Wait, they made a Butterfly Effect 2? 8O

People will probably watch this and say its great simply to appear "cultured", because that's what they did with the original so liking the sequel must make you cool too.

Shouldn't it be called Samantha Darko?

Oops, didn't read the first line. Though S.Darko still isn't quiet the same. Either way, it just shouldn't be. But when there's a buck to be made, so be it.

Now here's some good news on this already-beloved project:
Elizabeth Berkley, who shot to infamy after her turn as an ambitious dancer in Paul Verhoeven's 1995 drama Showgirls, has signed on to star in the Donnie Darko sequel S Darko. Berkley will play a religious convert who falls for a local pastor. The story is currently shooting in Utah and takes place seven years after the events in Richard Kelly's cult hit. Chris Fisher is directing. Kelly has no involvement in the film, which centres on the character Samantha Darko, Donnie's young sister in the original film. Daveigh Chase, who played Samantha aged 12 in the first film, will reprise her role.

reading this "synopsis" and the rest of this interview, i have a feeling this film is going to be VERY aggravating.... like someone deciding to make a sequel to Lost Highway without Lynch's involvement. as you all know, i really like the original. i know this is going to piss me off. her brief understating of the plot will sound to any trendster like a re-hash of Butterfly Effect and give the original a bad name. ugh.
VH1 wrote:'S. Darko' Star Briana Evigan Defends 'Donnie Darko' Sequel, Which Has Fans, Writer Of Original Flick Up In Arms
Though creator Richard Kelly has disowned it, Evigan promises a 'very twisted' movie.

Every few years, a dubiously motivated sequel comes along that builds up as much hatred as it does prerelease hype. Sometimes these films turn out to be suckfests, like "Basic Instinct 2" or "Son of the Mask." Other times they win us over, like "Casino Royale" or "Rocky Balboa."

These days, cameras are rolling on a controversial revisiting of the 2001 cult classic "Donnie Darko," which will star Elizabeth Berkley and "Step Up 2: The Streets" actress Briana Evigan.

"Right now I'm filming 'S. Darko' in Utah," Evigan beamed when we caught up with the Best Kiss winner at the recent MTV Movie Awards. "Chris Fisher is the coolest director."

Fisher, a TV director who has previously overseen episodes of "Chuck," "Cold Case" and "Moonlight," may in fact be cooler than Fonzie smoking a cigarette at a Jay-Z concert. But that still doesn't make him Richard Kelly, the filmmaker who wrote and directed "Donnie Darko" and has unequivocally disowned Evigan's film.

"This is a sequel to 'Donnie Darko,' and it's so crazy," she explained of the movie, set seven years after the original. "It's basically about going back in time and changing something. My character is named Corey — she's a selfish, badass kind of girl. She ends up switching a moment in time to take her life — [to help] somebody else, her best friend. It goes into all different dimensions, but it's really about turning something around for somebody else, and being able to go back and have another chance."

In the original flick, it was Donnie who had all the fun. This time around, the characters of Corey and Donnie's little sister, Samantha (a returning Daveigh Chase), will be on a road trip to Los Angeles, and both will be harnessing the hallucinations and time-travel abilities that once plagued Samantha's older brother.

"I have the power too," Evigan explained. "I'm [Samantha Darko's] best friend. ... In ways, with me and her, it's like two girls on a road trip. It's a really cool, fun script. But it's darker, and I hope everybody understands it."

Calling the script "very twisted," the 21-year-old actress also said that "S. Darko" will interact with the events of the original film, à la the "Back to the Future" sequels. "We just come back [in time] and change what happened in the first one."

In addition to Kelly, the film is progressing without any participation from "Donnie Darko" stars Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal, Drew Barrymore or Jena Malone. One character that does return, however, is Frank the giant rabbit guy.

"Yes, and it's really cool-looking," she said of the imaginary character. "It's scary."

Nevertheless, many fans of the original are up in arms over the sequel, as is Kelly himself.

"To set the record straight, here's a few facts I'd like to share with you all: I haven't read this script. I have absolutely no involvement with this production, nor will I ever be involved," the writer/director recently posted on his MySpace page. "I have no control over the rights from our original film, and neither I nor my producing partner, Sean McKittrick, stand to make any money from this film."

When reminded of Kelly's comments, Evigan said, "That's fine. We've got new people working on it. We have a great cast, a great director, a great producer. So, I think it's going to be fine. We've just got to make it work with our acting, what we're doing, and hope everyone enjoys it."

Insisting that "filming's been going great," the "Step Up 2" star added that when "S. Darko" is finished, she hopes Kelly will go see the movie and give it his stamp of approval.

"That'd be cool," she reasoned.
i want to hear from the director and writers about why they are doing this.

Any more questions?

This sounds horrible. Especially when they go mucking about with stuff in the first film. And apparently the power passes not just within the family, but to people who happened to live nearby or something (her best friend?). I stand by my earlier statement. They'll throw in some "weird" elements, have the giant bunny pop up a couple of times, and call it a movie.

i'm curious about her definition of "darker". i'm not sure that's possible. and yeah, if you're going to do a sequel that has been disowned by its creator, why the hell would you go back and touch the first film?? gah, this is giving me anxiety just thinking about it.

and aside from the brilliant unintentional comedy of Showgirls, has Berkely ever done anything worth a shit?

Oh come on people, can you not spot a good movie when you see one? I mean, look at how many times that interviewed girl uses the word "cool". If it takes that many cool's to describe a movie, it MUST be good right?

Right?!

saw S. Darko on the blue-ray shelves at best buy today while i was buying Watchmen. it made me throw up in my mouth a little reading the synopsis. it's probably at least as good as 'American Psycho 2'.

Okay, here's this film in a nutshell. Some people watched the original film. They really didn't understand it, but no matter, they figure they'll just repeat a bunch of the same elements and call it a sequel. Town crazy person who really knows what's going on (who's last name is Sparrow)...check. Wormhole effects coming out of people...check. Goodie goodie person who turns out to be hiding an evil secret...check. Several lingering shots of The Philosophy of Time Travel book even though it's never referenced or talked about...check. Time lapse shots of clouds..check. Rabbit mask stuck in for no reason as it has nothing to do with the story...check. Rap and call it a day. A pointless film.

Vice wrote: ‘donnie darko’ director planning ‘much bigger and more ambitious’ sequel

Donnie Darko blew the minds of an entire generation of young people. Joy Division! 18-year-old Jake Gyllenhaal! Brain-melting rifts in the space-time continuum! A strange spirit guide in a mansize rabbit suit! And perhaps most mind-blowing of all: the fim's director, Richard Kelly, was only 25 when he made the film (on the comparatively tiny, for Hollywood, budget of $7.3 million), and the movie almost went straight to DVD.

Thankfully, it didn't. It got a small cinematic release in 2001 and went on to become a cult classic, recently receiving a beautiful 4K restoration for its 15th anniversary. Now, following the fanatical reception this reissue received, Richard Kelly is hinting that he's working on an official sequel.

In an interview with HMV, the director disclosed, "I think there's something much bigger and more ambitious to do in that universe." He went on to describe his plans for a follow-up film as "big and expensive," but explained that fans may still have to wait a few years. "I think there's time to get to that," he said. "I want to make sure we've got the budget to do it justice and not to compromise anything. Another story in this world needs resources and we need to have that in place. I need to get my next film out of the gate and then we can go back and look at it."

In a strange plot twist, it turns out that Donnie Darko already has a sequel, technically. S. Darko, released to DVD and BluRay in 2009, was directed by Chris Fisher and stars Ed Westwick, of Gossip Girl fame. It was entirely unauthorized and its existence is still very triggering for Richard Kelly. But the official follow-up is bound to be incredible. Judging by the amount of time Kelly has taken to return to the Donnie Darko universe, he is as dedicated to getting the sequel right as this screaming woman is to Sparkle Motion.
