Fans of beloved films of the past have become increasingly forced to accept the fact that – in the age of remakes and franchise reboots – nothing is sacred. It’s true that some characters (James Bond, Batman, etc.) are bound to live on forever in an endless cycle of reimaginings as new filmmakers bring their own vision to life, and some films feel so old-fashioned that an attempt to modernize and bring the story to a new generation makes sense (i.e. the recent Carrie remake).

Yet, in other cases, a film’s appeal is based on the fact that it encapsulates the time of its release so perfectly that it becomes beloved largely because of its nostalgic properties. This particular group of films is far trickier to resurrect for today’s viewers, but in the case of one 1980s favorite, we’re going to see a remake anyway.

According to The Wrap, Rob Cohen – whose previous credits include the original The Fast and the Furious and xXx – will direct MGM’s upcoming remake of Road House, the 1989 action film that starred Patrick Swayze, Kelly Lynch and Sam Elliott. Michael Stokes will write the script for the new film.

The original Road House centered on a bouncer named James Dalton (Swayze) who is hired to lead security at a violent bar in Missouri. Its initial release was met with mixed reviews and modest success at the box office, but the film has since developed cult status. It’s unknown at this early stage what changes the remake will make to the original premise.

However, it’s hard to argue that – if the Road House remake hopes to emulate the over-the-top fun of the original – Cohen is a solid choice. After all, it is this very same tone that has helped the Fast and Furious franchise thrive, and while Cohen hasn’t touched the series since the first film, he did help to set its tone and style, which director Justin Lin honed and refreshed in subsequent entries. He’s also rebounding from the critical and financial failure of last year’s Alex Cross and could use a return to the world of action films.

Road House is also far from the only new take on a project that once starred Swayze. Remakes of Dirty Dancing (and opposed to the 2004 pseudo-sequel Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights) and Point Break are reportedly still in the works, as is a television series based on the Oscar-winning film Ghost. Still, the prospect of a Road House remake faces a similar challenge as last year’s Red Dawn (also, incidentally, a remake of a film starring Swayze).

Both Road House and Red Dawn are so indicative of the era in which they were conceived that they risk feeling out of place in 2013. Audiences may enjoy taking a nostalgic trip back to the testosterone-driven action films of the 1980s (as the success of The Expendables testifies), but a Road House remake risks feeling dated (as was the case with the Red Dawn remake) and a baseless attempt to cash in on a film that many fans still hold dear. Without the right approach, Road House may fail to connect with new viewers and alienate longtime fans, ending up on the wrong side of the thin line between an awesomely bad movie and just a bad movie altogether. Here’s hoping Cohen can steer clear of the latter.

The work of the late Patrick Swayze has already resulted in a couple of reboots and remakes with Red Dawn in 2012 and Point Break coming this Christmas. And now one more is on the way, but the role originated by the late actor will undergo a major change.

MGM is working on a remake of the 1980s action flick Road House, but rather than getting a young actor from today’s line-up of desired hunks, the studio has picked UFC fighter turned actress Ronda Rousey to take the lead role.

Variety reports the Ronda Rousey Road House reboot is early in development with MGM just now going out to writers to script the new take on the 80s favorite, and there’s reportedly a lot of competition for the job. That likely means xXx director Rob Cohen is no longer involved with the project after being linked to the reboot back in 2013.

For those unfamiliar with Road House, the film followed Patrick Swayze as a bouncer working at The Double Deuce, one of the wildest, loudest bars in Missouri. But he wasn’t just some dumb muscle-head throwing drunks out of a bar as he also had a degree in philosophy, a soft side for the ladies, and ended up taking it upon himself to save his small town from a corrupt businessman. It’s unclear how the story will be updated in the reboot, but production is set to begin in 2016, even though there’s no script just yet.

The casting of Rousey is certainly an intriguing choice. The idea of putting a woman in the lead role of an action flick like this is great news, however, I’m not sure Rousey has the chops too pull it off. She’s yet to prove that she has pure talent on the big screen, always feeling too artificial in her roles, even when playing herself in Entourage. She’s got the ass-kicking locked down, which will serve her well in the role, but I hope she’s working to improve her acting skills a bit.

At the very least, Rousey knows that she’s taking on an iconic film and role as she reached out to Patrick Swayze’s widow, Lisa Niemi, to get her blessing before taking the role.

This news comes after hearing that Rousey is also going to star in a biopic about herself, where she will play herself, in a story based on her autobiography about her life and career. Between that project and this Road House remake, it’s clear that Rousey has her eye on a successful acting career, but it remains to be seen if she can really make it work.
so what's the joke line going to be this time? "i thought you'd have bigger tits"?

so much for that idea. but for some reason, someone still thinks remaking this modern classic is a good idea.

Billy Magnussen, Daniela Melchior, Gbemisola Ikumelo and Lukas Gage are also cast.

Oscar and Tony-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal is officially set to star in “Road House,” a reimagined take on the classic movie starring Patrick Swayze, for Amazon’s Prime Video.

Doug Liman will direct the new movie, from a script written by Anthony Bagarozzi & Charles Mondry. After producing the original film for MGM in 1989, Joel Silver is back on board to produce the reimagining for his company Silver Pictures. JJ Hook, Alison Winter and Aaron Auch will serve as executive producers.

Reports that Gyllenhaal and Liman were circling the project broke in November 2021. Prime Video officially announced the production’s impending start on Tuesday.

“’Road House’ is a homerun for us. Not only is it a nod to fans of the original, but it is also a big, fun, broad audience movie,” stated Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke. “We are thrilled to collaborate with Joel, Doug, and this great cast led by Jake Gyllenhaal, and for them to come together to reimagine the classic MGM film as an action-packed adventure for our global audience.”

“I’m thrilled to put my own spin on the beloved ‘Road House’ legacy,” Doug Liman shared in a statement. “And I can’t wait to show audiences what Jake and I are going to do with this iconic role.”

In the 1989 cult classic, Swayze played James Dalton, a zen bouncer hired to clean up a rowdy Missouri bar. Dalton quickly runs up against the corrupt businessman (Ben Gazzara) who controls the small town. The film was a modest box office success — grossing $30 million against a reported $15 million budget — but has since earned the reputation of a cult classic and is among Swayze’s most beloved roles among the late actors’ fans.

“The original ‘Road House’ has a special place in my heart and I am so excited to bring this newly imagined version to audiences around the world,” Silver said. “Doug and I have each made some big, boisterous action movies and are ready to bring everything we have to this one.”

According to the studio, the new take stars Gyllenhaal as a former UFC fighter who takes a job as a bouncer at a rough-and-tumble roadhouse in the Florida Keys, but “soon discovers that not everything is what it seems in this tropical paradise.”

The Amazon Original movie is set to go into production in the Dominican Republic this month with a cast that also includes Billy Magnussen (“No Time to Die”), Daniela Melchior (“The Suicide Squad”), Gbemisola Ikumelo (“A League of Their Own”), Lukas Gage (“The White Lotus”), Hannah Love Lanier (“A Black Lady Sketch Show”), Travis Van Winkle (“You”), B.K. Cannon (“Why Women Kill”), Arturo Castro (“Broad City”), Dominique Columbus (“Ray Donovan”), Beau Knapp (“Seven Seconds”) and Bob Menery. At release, “Road House” will stream on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

Gyllenhaal is represented by WME and Liman is represented by CAA.
