2020 Oscar Predictions

Another year, another Oscars. My track record in recent years hasn't been as bullet proof as it used to be. The Academy isn't as predictable as it once was, and I don't see most of the nominated films anymore like I used to. Best Picture is really a toss up between 1917 and Parasite. Visual Effects is also a toss up between 1917 and Lion King. But here we go anyway.

I got 14 out of 24. Didn't see the Parasite groundswell building, but that's cool. It's a greatly entertaining experience.

20 out of 24. The categories I missed were ones that I thought could go either way, so it wasn't too big a surprise. The only one that caught me off guard was Sound Editing.
I actually fell asleep sometime during Joaquin Phoenix's speech and had to look up who won the last two categories this morning. First time I haven't made it through the whole show. Guess I'm getting old.

i only watched the last hour. seeing parasite win was really surprising. i haven't seen it, but holy shit that guy beat out some heavyweights in all categories. as usual, i have only seen two of the films in best picture category, so couldn't really play along, but i thought for sure hollywood would give QT his award for what is clearly a love letter to them. guess the dude just is never going to win. he's in good company that way i suppose. joon-ho's speeches were pretty great too. contrast that with joaquin's speech. he seems like a real nightmare to hang out with. at least most of the hollywood types avoided trying to preach to people this year. most. was sorry brad pitt fell into the trap, but he quickly course-corrected.

QT has won twice for writing, but not for directing or picture. Until a month ago, I thought this might be his year. And since he keeps insisting he'll retire after one more movie, they're running out of opportunities to honor him.

if that had been it, yeah that's great. i'm of the opinion that any acceptance speech for excellence in pretending to be someone else should probably not include a discussion about artificially inseminating cows, for example.
