Marvel studios had nothing to do with it. It is just based on a Marvel property. Venom had actually gone into production before the whole Sony/Marvel "we'll help you make your films suck less" deal happened. It's not a part of the same universe, nor did Marvel have any say in it.

Money is all that counts, and Marvel isn't getting anything extra out of it, having gotten their money for the rights long ago. If anything they're probably pissed that another studio is having such a success.

Venom is "in association with Marvel Studios" so they do have some piece of it, it seems. In any case, none of this is relevant to the classification of it as a Marvel film, ie. a film based on Marvel source material, which it is.

you can't just call anything based on a marvel property "a marvel film" when they've established the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe™, otherwise we'd be calling Howard The Duck a Marvel film. they changed the language of how we can talk about their films.
