Florida-based extreme black legends MORBID ANGEL are currently working at returned singer David Vincent's private studio on new material that will surface later this year/early 2008. The band and their management are also actively seeking label representation for the anxiously-awaited, as-yet-untitled follow-up to 2003's Heretic. Morbid Angel albums have been released with titles descending in alphabetical order and this trend will likely follow with a title beginning with the letter I. Morbid Angel's current lineup features Vincent, guitarist Trey Azagthoth and drummer Pete Sandoval. More news as it develops.
i will finally purchase another morbid angel release.

MORBID ANGEL Frontman Comments On SOULFLY Guest Appearance

MORBID ANGEL frontman David Vincent has commented on his guest appearance on SOULFLY's upcoming sixth album, due next summer via Roadrunner Records.

Said Vincent: "I was really stoked to work with Max [Cavalera, SOULFLY mainman] on his new album. SOULFLY is a great band and Max has been a friend for many years."

He added, "I think people are really going to dig the new stuff. The track I worked on is very brutal and Marc Rizzo's guitar work is exceptional!"

David is currently in the studio working on material for MORBID ANGEL's first studio album since 2003's "Heretic". The upcoming CD will mark the group's first release to feature Vincent since 1995's "Domination".

MORBID ANGEL is presently unsigned, having parted ways with Earache Records following "Heretic"'s release.

Although MORBID ANGEL's upcoming album does not currently have a name, its title will likely begin with the letter "I", in keeping with the band's tradition of titling their albums in alphabetical order beginning with 1989's "Altars of Madness", and continuing through "Heretic".

MORBID ANGEL's current lineup includes Vincent, guitarist Trey Azagthoth and drummer Pete Sandoval.

Metal Hammer writer Joel McIver reports that the new guitarist in Florida death metal legends MORBID ANGEL is none other than Zyklon’s longtime axemeister Destructhor (aka Thor Anders Myhren).

Frontman David Vincent told Metal Hammer in a recent interview, “The hunt for another guitarist to play alongside Trey (Azagthoth, the band’s primary songwriter) was long and difficult. Man, I tell you, we had tapes sent to us from all over the world from guys who wanted to play in our band, and many of them were extremely talented – but Thor was the right choice for us. He’s a fantastic guitarist and fits right in with the band. Also, Zyklon have supported Morbid Angel in the past, so the guys knew each other already.”

Legendary Florida death metal band MORBID ANGEL will debut at least one new song on their upcoming European festival tour, the group's frontman, David Vincent, revealed to Norway's "Tinitus" radio show in an interview that aired last week. "Obviously the urgency to get a [new second] guitar player in the band working with us kind of put the writing [for the upcoming MORBID ANGEL album] on hold," David said. "But we're looking forward to getting right back to it as soon as we're finished with these European festivals in July."

Although MORBID ANGEL's upcoming album does not currently have a name, its title will likely begin with the letter "I", in keeping with the band's tradition of titling their albums in alphabetical order beginning with 1989's "Altars of Madness", and continuing through "Heretic".

"A lot of people around the world have come up with titles that they thought it would be," Vincent told "Tinitus". "There is no title yet — we've not decided on it. We've not decided whether it's going to continue following the alphabet or not. So anything that you hear or read on the Internet is totally speculation by anyone."

MORBID ANGEL's follow-up to 2003's "Heretic" will mark the group's first release to feature David Vincent since 1995's "Domination".

MORBID ANGEL is presently unsigned, having parted ways with Earache Records following "Heretic"'s release.

As previously reported, MORBID ANGEL has recruited ZYKLON's longtime axemeister Destructhor (a.k.a. Thor Anders Myhren) to perform second-guitar duties on the upcoming trek.

"We had a fairly long audition process," David explained. "We looked long and hard at this. We decided when we began this process that it was gonna be a unanimous decision. We had several people [apply for the job] — very good players from, really, all over the world — and we got a video from Thor — the same video that we asked from all the different players; the same two songs — and some people didn't get past the initial discussion stage, and then some people went on to the next stage and it ended up that the band unanimously felt that Thor would be the best guitarist for the band."
i know i keep harping on this, but if there is one album coming out that i have hopes can be genre-altering again it's this one. i have been waiting a long, long time for this.

Not working on the new album? This guy, apparently:
Former MORBID ANGEL Guitarist Released From Prison - June 30, 2008
According to the web site of the Florida Department of Corrections, former MORBID ANGEL guitarist Richard Brunelle was released from the Zephyrhills Correctional Institution, located just north of Tampa, on June 21, 2008 after serving 14 months for cocaine possession.

The official Florida Department of Corrections photo of Brunelle can be viewed below.

Brunelle was in MORBID ANGEL from 1985 until 1992 and he appeared on the band's first two albums, 1989's "Altars of Madness" and 1991's "Blessed are the Sick". He returned to the group a couple of times — most notably in 1994 and 1998 — to help out with live work, but he never took part in any additional recording sessions with the band.

In a 2002 interview with Metal Side, Brunelle was asked why he left MORBID ANGEL. "I am no longer in MORBID ANGEL because we felt that it was time for me to move on," he replied. "There were some things that I could not see; I needed to explore a different path."

Brunelle formed PATHS OF POSSESSION in 1999 with Randy Butman (SILHAVEN), Jay Fossen and Erin "Goat" Fuller (CRYPTIC WINDS) and appeared on the group's indepdently released CD-R demo "Legacy in Ashes" in 2000.

Maybe the band will dust it off, like Exodus did with 'Impaler,' the song Kirk Hammett co-wrote way back when.

David, what an outlaw:
MORBID ANGEL's DAVID VINCENT Arrested On Weapons Charges - July 8, 2008
Author and Metal Hammer reporter Joel McIver received an unexpected phone call in the evening of Tuesday, July 8 from MORBID ANGEL frontman David Vincent. "I was arrested in Italy today — and charged with a weapons offense," explained the furious singer. Vincent went on to explain that the veteran death metal outfit had arrived at Milan airport that morning for a flight to Greece, but that he was detained after customs officials found a bullet-belt inside his checked-in luggage.

Arrested and escorted by a group of 15 to 20 armed police officers to a holding cell, Vincent endured over two and a half hours of questioning before being released. "I asked them again and again if they were kidding," recalled Vincent, "but they said no. The belt is obviously not made of real bullets. Metal is clearly not fashionable in the fashion centre of Europe." The bullet-belt, given to Vincent in 1989 by the Earache owner Digby Pearson when MORBID ANGEL signed to his label, was confiscated and the singer was charged with an offense that translates approximately as "possession of contraband weapons."

Asked for a statement by McIver, Vincent replied: "My comment is this. For 20 years I've had my same friendly bullet-belt with me at all metal occasions. After 20 years of being a lawless individual, I'm happy that the Keystone Kops of spaghetti western fame have been able to show me the error of my ways." He was given a document requesting his attendance in an Italian court, with the date yet to be decided, and was required to contact a lawyer on his return to the USA in order to arrange his defense. "I doubt very much that I'll ever get the belt back," he fumed down the line from Greece, where his band are playing tomorrow evening (Wednesday, July 9). "We barely made our flight," he added. "We only made it to the plane because we make a point of showing up early at airports in case of bullshit like this."

The audio samples on iTunes do not bode well. Doesn't sound like the Morbid Angel I remember by and large, and at times I wondered, "Are they kidding?"

(I realize this doesn't say much for my credibility to show interest in a release, read a negative response from another poster here, then act all, "Yeah, he's right, it sounds crappy!" after I've heard 90-seconds snippets of it myself. Well, what can you do.)
