It's not their own content. NBC does not produce the show, Broadway Video does. Many network shows are not produced by the network itself, though with mergers and consolidation it's to the point where a lot are. The initial contract includes the rights to distribute clips via social media as well for x amount of time. Once that time passes the rights revert back to the original owner. Thus the reason NBC can't make every SNL in the entire history of the show available. It would cost them too much to license the whole thing. That's not even getting to licensing the music (which is part of why the DVD releases stopped).

This is going to be so awful. They need to get Alex Kurtzman out of Star Trek before he completely flushes the franchise down the toilet. Oh wait, too late. Let's hope when CBS and Viacom re-merge it'll get rid of all the licensing nonsense issues and Star Trek can go back to being Star Trek.
