Clearly, there's SOMETHING going on. So I'm sorry Mike but you're just going to have to get excited about this stuff asap. For your own sake.

But where would it all lead? First excitement, then giddiness and from there's it's only a short jump to pure joy. Won't somebody think of the children!

Confirmed that the new Arrow release of Dune is from a brand new 4k transfer. No word yet on if they'll release a 4k disk as well, but it seems likely.

That would be a first for Arrow, who have argued against the commercial viability of UHD blu-rays in the past. They may however have been swayed by the success (I think?) of Studio Canal's Elephant Man release. Do you have that? Tempted, but it's rather pricey.

The must have changed their mind at some point, as they started releasing some this year. Flash Gordon is out now. Pitch Black and Cinema Paradiso come out next month.

I have it, but I don't have a UHD player nor a 4k set, so I have no idea what it actually looks like. The pop up diorama is nice though. :)

Ah, this is like one of those old Lucasfilm adventure games where we need to combine the two (three) things.

yeah i bought my first 4k release, but also don't have a player or a set. couldn't resist the midsommar artbook set though.

very good news we are getting a fresh transfer of Dune. that makes me happy.

The Shining in Dolby Vision just looks insanely good.

Inland Empire - The "restoration" doesn't really look that much different than it originally did. There's just so much you can do with DV cam footage. But dear god, the sound mix. WTF happened there? Neff was really down on it but initially I just thought maybe he was a bit miffed someone else was mixing some of his work. Nope, it's every bit as awful as he said it was. Badly distorted and muffled. I hope Lost Highway isn't equally as fucked up given it's also a Janus Films restoration.

Lost Highway is coming out on 4K later in the year from Criterion, a new restoration supervised by Lynch. This presumably qualifies for some excitement - will darkness be getting a 4K UHD player to see that Rothko-esque corridor in its full glory again?

Since it was a theatrical viewing and the blu-ray/4k of the new restoration hasn't even been announced yet I'm not sure if this is the right place for it. But I guess there's only like five of us here so it's not like we don't all read every post everywhere anyway. :-)

I do have a 4k UHD player, have for about a year now. But I still have my same 1080p HDTV I bought in 2006. I don't think I've turned it on once in 2022. I maybe turned it on twice in 2021. I just don't have time to sit down and watch stuff anymore. So I'm not in a huge hurry to spend money on a new tv that I likely won't use. I do own all the Lynch 4k releases, as well as all the Kubrick Warner and Sony releases. Also Fanny Lye Deliver'd and Howard the Duck. But given how little time I have to devote to watching stuff, I'm not in a huge hurry to replace much of my collection.

Since it doesn't look like this thread has been updated in a while, here are the Lynch 4k releases:

Elephant Man (UK only from Studio Canal)
Dune (Arrow)
Twin Peaks Pilot/S03E08 (only available in the From Z to A box set)
Mulholland Drive (Criterion/Studio Canal)

Lost Highway (coming soon from Criterion)
Inland Empire (maybe coming soon from Criterion. They did a 4k remaster, but why the hell you'd need this SD upconvert in 4k is beyond me. If I was them I'd stick with a blu-ray release. I suspect whatever they release will come out the same month as Lost Highway)

Now that Criterion have opened the 4k flood gates, it's probably inevitable that Blue Velvet and Fire Walk With Me will get 4k releases, as well as finally putting out one for Elephant Man here in the US. Unfortunately Eraserhead was only a 2k new transfer.

Yup, I have Elephant Man and Dune. Dune from Arrow is top notch, although it would've been nice to have the longer cut included. Elephant Man has a great encode from FIM, but StudioCanal's master isn't perfect (albeit not bad). Also, got to be honest, the film hasn't grown on me, in fact I probably liked it less than my previous viewing 25 years ago (Lynch's spiritualist elements are so at odds with the rest of the script, and so unwelcome and patronising to the real-life Merrick, that by the end it feels like parody). Haven't bothered with MD or that expensive boxset. Expecting top quality on LH from Criterion and, yes, FWWM and BV should follow at some point, one presumes... It's disappointing however how half-hearted Criterion are being with their 4K UHD blu-ray releases, in comparison to, say. Arrow, Kino and Studio Canal. Just recently they've put out classics like Flight of the Phoenix and Written on the Wind without bothering to press a 4K edition, which is unforgivable in 2022. And there are so many classics in their collection just sitting there with 4K masters extant and yet no obvious release on the horizon (Antonioni, Tarkovsky, Bresson, Altman, Heaven's Gate, One-Eyed Jacks, the aforementioned Lynch titles, the list goes on). Considering they own a full post setup - Lasergraphics scanner, resoration seats, grading - there's no financial reason one can think of for not getting these out there. It just seems like they don't really give a shit and are more focused on promoting their tiresome streaming channel.

Criterion has always been slow on embracing new formats. When DVDs came out they were still putting out laserdisc for over a year after most studios were on the dvd train. And then it took them almost another two years to finally embrace anamorphic dvds unlike most other major studio. It took almost three years after the mainstream introduction of blu-rays for them to finally embrace that format. So they fact they're slow with 4k is really nothing new in the history of Criterion and formats.
