THR wrote:Lawrence Kasdan to pen 'Robotech'
Big-screen adaptation of the anime classic

Veteran screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan has been hired to write "Robotech," Warner Bros.' adaptation of the anime classic.

Additionally, Akiva Goldsman and Chuck Roven are boarding the project as producers, joining Tobey Maguire and Drew Crevello.

"Robotech" was a 1980s cartoon series from Harmony Gold USA and Tatsunoko Prods. It was re-edited and re-dialogued to combine three Japanese anime series to give the producers enough episodes to air as a daily syndicated series.

A sprawling sci-fi epic, "Robotech" takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion centers on a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship's energy source known as "protoculture," and the planet's hope for survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots.

Frank Agrama of rights-holder Harmony Gold will exec produce as will Jason Netter.

Crevello and Maguire brought the project to Warners in September.

Matt Reilly and Matt Milam overseeing for Warners.

"Robotech" extends Kasdan's return to the fantasy genre that began last year when he was tapped to pen the "Clash of the Titans" remake for Warners and Thunder Road. Kasdan wrote the screenplays for "Return of the Jedi," "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark" before penning such works as "The Big Chill" and "Grand Canyon."

He is repped by CAA.
i am a HUGE robotech nerd. this would be SO EPIC if done correctly. man, i'm drooling at the thought of this. the time would appear right, given the technology demonstrated in Transformers....

I could stand to see valkyrie combat action. They better not skip the 'plane-with-wings-and-arms' transformational mode.

The destruction of Macross City during the ship transformation is also going to be pretty cool.

I guess I'm pretty nerdy about Robotech/Macross shit too.

Don't exaggerate. The interview said that Koepp needed one line and he called Kasdan who gave it to him. So you can blame him for one line of dialog, but nothing else.

"300" and "G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra" scribe Michael Gordon has come onboard the live-action film adaptation of the classic anime series "Robotech".

The original 1985 show was actually a combination of three different Japanese television shows - footage from "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross," "Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross," and "Genesis Climber Mospeada" was cobbled together and redubbed to create an original 85-episode animated series that could be syndicated across U.S. markets.

As a result, a lot of rewriting and editing had to be done to stitch together three unrelated series to portray it as one cohesive storyline that spans three generations. To this day, the first season (based on the 'Macross' series) remains the most well-regarded.

Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton are set to produce the project and are already said to be considering filmmaker Andy Muschietti ("Mama") as the project's potential director.

Various people have tried to adapt the series into a film over the past decade including Tobey Maguire, Akiva Goldsman, Lawrence Kasdan, Nic Mathieu, Jody Harold, and Alfred Gough & Miles Millar.

Harmony Gold, the production company responsible for bringing "Robotech" to the United States, revealed back in July they are planning the Kickstarter-funded miniseries "Robotech: Academy," but said campaign did not meet its funding goals.
still kicking around out there. we'll see.

James Wan has been an in-demand director for the past couple years, but the billion-dollar success of Furious 7 pushed him into a new bracket as far as studios are concerned. We know that Warner Bros. wants to keep him around, and that he’s been in talks to make Aquaman. But if current reports are correct WB doesn’t quite know what it is doing with Aquaman yet, which may be part of what leads to this new deal.

Now James Wan is in early talks to direct the Robotech movie at Sony, as the studio makes a play to grab the hottest guy in town.

THR reports, saying that Wan remains in the mix for Aquaman, and Universal wants him for the next Fast and Furious film, but that Sony has given him an offer for the mech movie. Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton are producing, and there’s a script by Michael Gordon.

The trade also says that Robotech features two young pilots in “a sprawling sci-fi epic that takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific island. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions.”

That makes the film sound like it will incorporate elements of the multiple Japanese TV series that were re-edited and scripted to be a trilogy of American cartoon series. But other reports call Robotech an initiative for “a worldwide franchise,” which means this is probably being developed as the first of three films.

So none of these deals are definite yet, but reports are already pegging Robotech as the most likely choice for the filmmaker. Meanwhile we do know that Wan will next make the Conjuring sequel, which already has a 2016 release date.

In another 14 years we'll probably still be posting stories about how they're trying to make a live action Robotech. That might not be a bad thing. Sony's track record isn't too great lately. They can't even make a Spider-man franchise film that doesn't suck without Marvel taking over and milking past nostalgia.
