Fox has unveiled the first trailer for its upcoming revival of “The X-Files,” which is set to premiere in January 2016. The network debuted the two-part promo during episodes of its Monday night shows “Gotham” and “Minority Report.”

The new footage captures the same air of mystery and paranoia that became a hallmark of the sci-fi procedural, with plenty of callbacks to the original series, including Mitch Pileggi’s Walter Skinner and the return of the villainous Smoking Man (William B. Davis).

“In 2002, our investigation ceased, but my personal obsession did not,” David Duchovny’s Fox Mulder intones at the start of the trailer. “They police us and spy on us, tell us that makes us safer – we’ve never been in more danger.”

It’s not long before Mulder reunites with former partner (both professionally and personally) Dana Scully, played by Gillian Anderson, who warns him, “You are on dangerous ground here.”

Fox will present the first episode of the hotly-anticipated revival at New York Comic-Con on Oct. 10, following its worldwide premiere at MIPCOM in Cannes, France on Oct. 6. The series debuts in a special two-night event beginning Sunday, Jan. 24, following the NFC Championship Game, and continues with its time period premiere on Monday, Jan. 25 at 8 p.m.

According to Fox, the six-episode event series will encompass a mixture of stand-alone episodes and those that further the original show’s seminal mythology. In the opening episode, Mulder and Scully take on a case of a possible alien abductee. The all-new episodes will feature appearances by guest stars including Joel McHale (“Community”), Robbie Amell (“The Flash”), Lauren Ambrose (“Dig,” “Six Feet Under”), Annabeth Gish (“The Bridge”), Annet Mahendru (“The Americans”), Rhys Darby (“Flight of the Conchords”) and Kumail Nanjiani (“Silicon Valley”). Three of the episodes are written and directed by Chris Carter, with the remaining three written and directed by series veterans Glen Morgan, Darin Morgan and James Wong.

Well the years are showing but hopefully the showrunners have something interesting in mind.

They debuted the first episode at the NYC ComicCon last week, I read one very positive fanboy review and one very negative non-fanboy review. Apparently the first and last episodes will be 'conspiracy,' with four stand-alones in the middle. Oh and Agent Reyes will be back for one episode! Everyone breath a collective sigh of joy.

Well, two episodes in and I'm pleased. Carter's kickoff was hardly as bad as critics said, albeit sloppy around the edges in the usual way Carter episodes always were. Tonight's was even better, managing to be a standalone but very much a part of the mythology as well, with some good gore. Next week, the hilarious Davin Morgan returns t the writer's chair. Can't wait.

Coming to it as a newbie, yeah, I'm sure it didn't hold together. If you'd followed the show from its inception then you'd see it was in keeping with the fun original, which was basically a procedural Twilight Zone launched in the pre-internet age.

The first two episodes aired Sunday and Monday night respectively. Your DVR must have missed one.

Apparently the episodes are running out of order:
Chris Carter wrote:Because we have a story arc that runs through the middle of the series…we were concerned that, coming right off a mythology episode [and] going right into a standalone episode, people would say, ‘What’s happened?’ So, it actually worked out. It served episode 2 better to replace it with 5. It created a better continuity.

Ok, just saw the first episode and I'm sorry but I gotta side with Mr Clay on this one.

What an absolute load of crap from first to last minute. Extremely poorly written, even worse when it comes to the actual execution of the shambles of a script that they cobbled together.

I mean, I get that you have to make up a reason for re-opening the X-files and all that, but jesus christ - they tried to cram EVERYTHING from the Duchovny era of the original series into 45 minutes of stuff. 45 minutes of pure, poor exposition.

Will report back from the second episode.

Have you re-watched the source material lately? I didn't get into this show until Season 3+ because it was so fucking mixed bag in its early going. It's always been a sloppy show with great spikes in quality. It's nothing more or less now.

Oh I totally remember this show being hit or miss throughout most of it. But that doesn't excuse the fact that the first show of the new series, the first in 14 years, was this appalling. I give Carter a pass for the first few seasons being a bit shaky. They were still trying to find their footing, still trying to figure out where they wanted to go and who these characters really are and what tone the show should have. Shouldn't be a problem in the same way this time around, should it?
