Super Pumped - the story of travis kalanick and uber. it's been a really great show so far. extremely engaging and in my experience very telling of how the silicon valley startup world works and how the culture is. acting has been fantastic, JGL is spot on. very much recommend this show if you are remotely interested. finale is sunday night.

WeCrashed - based on a podcast i guess about the rise and fall of wework & adam neumann. lots of high-caliber cast in this, and it's well done, but goddamn do you kind of just want everyone involved to fucking die. it's so gross, but also really kind of happened that way. i can't wait to see them taken down, crash and burn style. contrasted with the above, where you kind of feel bad for TK, this will leave you yelling at the screen, praying for adam's death every waking moment. his wife is full of nonsense too. you would hope that the couple ends up spending many years in prison for how they essentially stole money from investors, but nope. they're currently living in the hamptons next to cousin gweneth paltrow with their nearly $2bil payout. of course, investors bear the blame here too and have paid the price with their wallets. somehow this show still has several episodes left. oof.
You should watch The Dropout next.

S1 finale was yesterday and holy fuck that is how you finale! This show fucking rules. And it was just announced that it was renewed for S2. Thank the fucking entertainment gods for that, after that cliffhanger ending. Jesus. You should definitely watch this show. Stick with it. It rules.

watched the finale, and it was fucking nailed. a really great series, great cast, well written. highly recommended. illustrates how that "killer instinct" that makes start ups successful just isn't sustainable once they grow into a "real" company. it becomes problematic from a culture perspective once you start hiring folks that are great at their jobs but not warriors at heart. this isn't a show about uber, it's a show about corporate culture, and again - highly recommended.

All The Old Knives - Captain Kirk and Maeve enter the holodeck program for “terrorist plot espionage traitor inside man” keywords. You think you know where this is going pretty early, and you are right, you just don’t know the “why”, which is a twist on the twist. Other than that, pretty straight forward drama here, not so much thriller. Most of the film takes place at a dinner table, which I liked quite a bit. But intercutting with all the backstory takes away from that contrivance (although not sure how you’d tell the story otherwise). A solid “meh” from me with stand out performance by Thandiwe Newton.

New Netflix movie from one of the Game of Thrones guys. Did you like it then, O-Dot?

Cat People - rewatched this over the weekend. hadn't seen it in a long time. i had forgotten how disturbing that "zoo" was. all the animals are in like 10 square feet of space. fucking awful. lots of plot holes and questions in this, but still a very enjoyable film. highly stylistic, very sexy. like The Hunger, another entry in that very brief period where they made "erotic horror" films. it was great seeing ed begley jr's arm ripped off, didn't really need to see john heard's ass, but the rest of the film makes up for it. audio is shit and could use some love, but i did love this film. recommended rewatch if you haven't seen it lately.

Peaky Blinders - can't believe we don't have a thread here for this, but kind of no point now given that the last season has wrapped, at least overseas (hits here on June 10). we've been going through yet another rewatch of this phenomenal show. just finished s4 last night. this show is fucking unbelievably good. i love it so much. if you've never watched it, or have avoided doing so because of the seemingly goofy name, correct this error ASAP. still plenty of time to see it all before the final season, as there are only 6 episodes per season. goddamn is this show good. it's so much better watching it all at once rather than waiting years between seasons.

finished this. it's so baffling/depressing/maddening what neumann did to people. he comes across as a mental patient, fucks all of his investors and employees, and still ends up walking away with $2.8B. i hope he dies in a fucking fire. the most surprising thing of this film was learning that WeWork still exists and finally did IPO late last year. news to me.

There's a WeWork building in a prominent spot along I-25 near downtown Denver, and it appears to be empty. It has a For Lease banner on the side and a ton of graffiti on the lower, brick part of the building facing the highway. It looks like crap, and the building is only a couple years old.

The Boys - i thought we had a thread here but i can't find one, so posting here. S1 was fucking fantastic. watched the first two episodes of S2 and was quite let down. it was nowhere near the pace of the first season. took a break for a week before coming back to it. either i needed that perspective shift, or it got way better very quickly, or both, but loving S2 so far. i'm only one episode behind now, so i've seen the first six. some great scenes here for sure. and gretchen from You're The Worst is in this season as kind of the big baddie (i guess?) highly recommended if you haven't gotten in on this show yet.

s3 is coming. can't be soon enough. i need more of this.

Night Sky - Amazon series starring Sissy Spacek and JK Simmons. Came out of nowhere for me, I didn’t know anything about it and went in blind. We ended up watching all 8 episodes in two days. From a tone and pacing perspective, it kind of reminds me of For All Mankind in that it starts slowly and you aren’t really sure what it’s about, but then pieces of the underlying plot surface here and there. Keeps you guessing, and the acting is so good that you will be engrossed in it. It was a really great show, I hope they get renewed. That ending promises some truly bonkers shit could happen next. Really well done show. If you’re into heavy drama with sci-fi elements, this is for you.

George Carlin’s American Dream - this is mostly a documentary about his life told by him and those closest to him. If you don’t know anything about him, it’s pretty fascinating, I imagine, seeing how he changed over the years and how many different phases he really had. I say “mostly” because it is a Judd Apatow production, so of course he feels compelled to insert his personal feelings toward the end. There’s a montage that’s played over some of his bits that includes all kinds of social and political happenings that have occurred since George’s death. The implication is “this is how George would have felt about these things”. Really? You have no fucking idea how he would have felt about them. I have a feeling it probably wouldn’t be what they seem to think it would be - he wouldn’t have been afraid to take them down a few pegs, too - just like every other institution. But sure, go ahead and write for one of the greatest and scathing comedy/commentators of our lifetime. I’m sure you know better than he did. Yes, I am aware Kelly was also heavily involved. I don’t care who it was, but just deciding you know what George’s take would be on something doesn’t fucking make it true, and it felt disingenuous at best, maddening and gross. It was completely unnecessary and cheapened the whole thing.

TC wrote:The Flight Attendant - let me preface this by reminding anyone who doesn't know how much i fucking hate the big bang theory. it is insulting to me as a human, let alone "nerd", and its mere existence is antithetical to everything i am. that being said, this show starting cuoco looked good so i took a peek. halfway through the season now and the show is pretty great. she (her character) is the biggest train wreck of a human i've seen in a while in many ways. there are some questionable plot conveniences but it moves along briskly enough that you don't pay attention too long to them. plus, daario naharis (the second) is good. a few other familiar faces round out a good cast. so far, recommended. stay tuned as i wrap the season.
It took a couple side roads in episodes 6 & 7 i think, but the crazy wrap was worth it. The entire thing was driven by an over the top performance by cuoco. She was a tour de force of acting in this, showcasing the entire range of emotions and moods. Hope it gets an S2, given the set up. But, that could also be going down a hackneyed path. Guess we’ll see. It was enjoyable for sure.
ok, wrapped s2 last night. once again, this whole thing is driven by her powerhouse of acting. extremely weird twists and turns, some surreal elements here (shoutout bebo, the one true god), just an all around good show. the very ending - the subplot twist - was a little goofy, but the season wrapped nicely with a pretty bow, which was unexpected. i figured there'd be some last-minute oddity, setting up another season, but nope. wonder if they are thinking they may not be renewed. i hope they are. if you haven't watched this, you now have two seasons to stream at your own pace. i recommend you check it out.

Old - M. Night Shyamalan’s most recent film. I don’t know how he can be involved in something as good as Servant but still put out goofy movies. This was far from his worst film, and the final “reveal” wasn’t as ham-fisted as his usual “twists”, but it was still immediately forgettable. Also, the multiple tags at the end were hugely unnecessary and took away from the entirety of the rest of it. Given the “reveal”, my feelings about it could also stem from the fact that
i could absolutely see a pharma company doing exactly that, so it didn’t seem like a “shock” or whatever. Just seemed like something they would do to a ‘T’. Of course they would. And really, I think nearly everyone would support such an amazing shortcut to decades-long testing, especially now. You know, as long as people volunteered, or we gave prisoners that options or something rather than luring unsuspecting sick people there to murder them.
Also felt like there was a lot more to play with in the concept than he did, and having the rapper’s name be “Mid-Sized Sedan” was absolutely ridiculous. I get that he’s taking the piss out of those folks but it’s so unrealistic that it immediately takes you out of things. And yes, of course he casts himself in a meaningful role. If not for Servant, I’m pretty sure the world would be done with this guy, right? How long since his last great film?

so I did. not as transparent regarding the world of silicon valley, but certainly full of drama. watching this just makes you wonder how fucking stupid was the entire board (and walgreens' board) to not ever do any due dilligence on whether or not there was ever a functional product? i'm sure there is more to the story, but holy shit. just because she was a reasonably pretty woman you forgot how business works? yes, clearly she and sunny were huge pieces of shit, but the board is 100% to blame here. they should all be serving jail time for negligence. again, if everything presented in this series is the entirety of the story, which i'm sure it isn't. more a comment of how trimming things to make it a tight story can really take you out of it when the omissions are so glaring that you have a hard time believing this is what happened. also, holy shit what happened to michael ironside? jesus. but yes, enjoyable show that just makes me want to really know the whole story. thinking about buying carryrou's book.
