Bond 24: Spectre

Self-professed Bond fanboy Christopher Nolan has confessed his desire to direct a 007 film a number of times over the years, and even gone so far as meeting with the producers. So far, it hasn’t quite worked out. Now that Sam Mendes has officially turned down Bond 24, though, it seems Nolan may finally get his shot.

A new report indicates that the Dark Knight director is in informal talks to helm the next Bond film, and possibly even the one after that if all goes well. Given that Skyfall bore more than a few marks of Nolan’s influence, Nolan seems like an obvious but excellent pick.

According to The Daily Mail’s Baz Bamigboye, Nolan has been approached and is now in early conversations with producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. Nolan’s hiring is far from a done deal at this point, but Bamigboye’s source remarks, “It does no harm for Broccoli and Wilson to talk with Nolan, even if nothing happens this time round.”

There are a few potential roadblocks, however. While Nolan reiterated his interest in the franchise last year, he also said he’d only take the gig if it was “the right situation and the right time in their cycle of things.” Whether now counts as “the right time” is debatable.

Although Bond 24 is no longer aiming for a 2014 release, the studio still wants to get it out within the next three years. So assuming Bond 24 is due in 2016, that makes the scheduling tight squeeze for Nolan, who’s currently gearing up to shoot Interstellar for a fall 2014 release.

And Bond could be a huge undertaking. Although the original plan to link Bond 24 and Bond 25 has been scrapped, last we heard, this latest dispatch suggests the idea may be in play again. Bamigboye references Mendes in outlining the schedule, which he says will include 12-18 months of pre-production, six months of production, and a follow-up planned for “soon after.”

On the other hand, it’s possible that Eon Productions would be willing to wait for Nolan, given that he’s practically guaranteed to earn buzz and, more importantly, make them tons of money. It’s also conceivable that they could keep him in mind for a future installment. In any case, we should be able to expect more news soon as the Bond director search continues to heat up.
uh... not sure this is a great fit....

I could see it being a pretty great fit, actually. I could imagine Nolan bringing a much better, complicated spy story to the table than a lot of others have in the past, including Mendes as Skyfall is far from an unmitigated success in my book. Nicely shot, a few good setpieces and a good villain, but otherwise kind of all over the place narrative-wise, and my ongoing distaste for Judi Dench playing such a big role in the franchise wasn't exactly minimized with her being given more screen time than ever before.

Well so much for that, they've announced today that Mendes is officially back in as the director.

Yup, saw that. From a business standpoint, the two seem to be a nice fit for each other.

FUCK. YES.
DH wrote:It's Official: Bond 24 Is "SPECTRE"

Filmmaker Sam Mendes, actor Daniel Craig and the cast of the twenty-fourth James Bond film appeared at a press announcement for the film at Pinewood Studios this morning in the United Kingdom.

The big news was the reveal of the film's title "SPECTRE," a reference to the famous criminal organisation that served as the main antagonist of the Sean Connery-era of the franchise and looks to be making a comeback here. This would pretty much cement rumors of the return of Bond's nemesis Blofeld in the film (though his name wasn't mentioned at the event).

Rehearsals are underway with shooting to begin on Monday. Filming will take place in London, Rome, Mexico City, Morocco, and Austria.

New cast members include Christoph Waltz as the villain Oberhauser, Dave Bautista as Mr. Hinx, Monica Bellucci as Lucia Sciarra, Lea Seydoux as Madeline Swan, and Andrew Scott as a new MI6/Home Office staffer Denbigh.

Returning cast members include Daniel Craig (James Bond), Ralph Fiennes (M), Naomie Harris (Miss Moneypenny), Ben Whishaw (Q) and Rory Kinnear (Tanner).

Much of the crew behind "Skyfall" is also back including the composer, costumer, production designer, and the exact same writing team. Key new members are editor Lee Smith and cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema.

The new Aston Martin DB10 will also star in the film and was unveiled at the announcement.

This. Thought Skyfall was all over the map and too much Dench, but since she's gone and they got the Spectre rights back, could be the best new one yet.

Casino Royale was a great entry in the series, but much as I like Craig in the role I feel his follow-ups have been disappointments to varying degrees.

SPECTRE sounds good on paper, but we'll see.

The Sony leak strikes again. Apparently the whole script for this film leaked, as well as various studio notes that go with it. I won't link to it here so as to keep the MPAA gods happy, but you can google it and likely find info. The reports say they're still having issues with the third act and will likely re-write some of it.

The Scott Rudin-Amy Pascal emails about Jobs are my personal favorite leaks so far.

With the obvious exception of the Obama jibes, Rudin comes across okay, or at least like a real producer not willing to take any shit. Fincher on the other hand comes across like an overly capricious hack. His films since The Social Network have been abysmal, he should be jumping at the chance to direct another Sorkin script, but seems he would rather flit about and play power games. Nice. One can sympathise with Pascal's disappointment at Boyle stepping in (a great theatre/events director with a hyperbolic approach to film direction that would drain any subtlety from the source material). Sony can survive this, of course, but will the Jobs movie? Not so sure.

Re: Bond 24: Spectre

Fincher has always struck me as a mere technician with no particular vision beyond the thoughts behind the script he's handed. I did like Gone Girl, but coming directly after yet another pop book thriller adaptation he doesn't appear to be trending anywhere interesting. Having just sadly signed off on The Newsroom, I'm in Sorkin withdrawl and hope whatever he wrote down on his grocery list gets a budget and a cast soon, whoever directs it.

Even with a new cinematographer it appears this will be a good looking film, which is a major selling point for me. Skyfall had issues but it had some lovely imagery at times.

In all fairness, Spectre's horrific plan to bring down the internet with an overabundance of stupid cat memes seems to be just about complete. So it's not like they've been totally lazy on the cat front.
