Re: Judge Dredd (201x)

For some weird reason, I decided to spend 90 minutes of my life on Dredd this morning. Did not hate it. Did not exactly love it either, but it was ok'ish weekend entertainment and true to the comic in about a thousand more ways than that train wreck with Sly.

Watched it this afternoon. I'm in the didn't love it didn't hate it boat as well. A lot of the dialog was pretty silly, as was Urban's Batman-like growling. I did like the visual look of the slow-mo sequences.

Have to say I like having Netflix, I usually watch a movie or two a week at my desk on the laptop thanks to that, and pick some things my wife probably wouldn't be interested in. That said, between this and having all the cable channels we probably need to cut one of them out of the budget and Netflix will probably go on the chopping block. The new Arrested Development (which is why we got it again) was so-so at best, and Orange Is The New Black is the most overrated milquetoast melodrama I think I've ever seen. Got bored 15 minutes in to House of Cards, never went back.

I love Netflix simply because I have a four year old at home who can navigate through it on both ipad and iphone like a pro. She loves all of the childrens shows and that alone is worth the $12 or whatever it is I pay.

I've had Netflix since it started. I even still have the Bill Clinton Grand Jury Testimony DVD they gave away to try to get new subscribers (sadly I got the real one and not the Chinese porn some people were sent due to a mistake at the manufacturing plant). Finally last year I dumped the DVD portion of the plan. I never seemed to have time to watch discs, and they raised the prices so much that my lack of use became something I noticed. I still have the streaming, since most of my settop boxes have it built in as well as my phone app. I probably still don't use it as much as I'd like to, but having another source of media does come in handy. I don't have cable as it costs too much money for the few shows I would watch on it, so between Netflix and other online alternatives my entertainment needs are covered.

As I mentioned on FB the other day, we recently dropped our premium channels (Showtime, Starz, Encore) when AT&T wouldn't extend any of its promotional rates. So we're back down to just the standard cable stuff — news channels, Comedy Central, FX, AMC, etc. And to be honest we've also talked of just dropping cable altogether — Breaking Bad is over with, Mad Men has been sputtering, and the rest of the stuff we wouldn't really miss anyway. Matter of fact, we were cable-less for about 2 1/2 years until summer 2012 and survived just fine.

As far as Netflix, my membership extends back 11 years and we added the streaming service this spring to see the new Arrested Development eps (verdict: not bad, but not essential, either). We scaled back the discs-at-home option to one-at-a-time, and would probably drop the disc option altogether if the streaming branch would ramp up its offerings — there's just so much stuff not available for streaming that it's almost comical.

Basically, we're young parents who both work full time and don't have much time to watch anything anyway.

We justify having ALL THE TEEVEES because as parents of 3, we have no social life outside of hanging out with other friends with kids, so our entertainment budget goes to Xfinity.

Check out Fandor, pretty large catalogue with a lot of good stuff (eg. every major Herzog in HD). Although to really cover the bases you need Hulu+ too, for the Janus/Criterion catalogue, and Netflix, for the studio specialty catalogues, and that's just the indie/arthouse genre. Like I was saying on Facebook, in a few years folks are going to be subscribing to dozens of these streaming services at a time and cable will be out the window. HBO are launching stand-alone streaming next year, so get ready to pay for that.
